Unarmed trees. Leaves paripinnate; specialised glands on petiole and
rhachis 0. Leaflets opposite or subopposite; petiolule
twisted; lamina with a small dot-like gland on the under-surface of each leaflet near the margin on the side nearest
the leaf base. Inflorescence a simple raceme or racemes arranged in
panicles. Flowers arranged spirally. Bracteoles large,
caducous. Calyx tube elongate. Sepals 4, unequal. Petal 1,
large, clawed, the others incompletely developed or 0.
Stamens (in ours) normally 7 fertile and 2 staminodes. Style long
with a small stigma. Pod dehiscent, with 2 thick valves.
Seeds embedded in a white pith with a basal, brightly coloured, aril. Worldwide: 12 species in the Old World tropics, 2 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 2 species in Zambia |
