Description of the genus

Annual (ours) or perennial herbs. Leaves paripinnate, 4-foliolate. Stipules persistent, apiculate, partly adnate to the petiole. Inflorescences axillary dense sessile 2-7-flowered spikes. Bracts 2-apiculate. Flowers yellow with red markings. Calyx 5-lobed; the 4 upper joined. Pod 1-6-seeded, maturing underground, constricted between the seeds, but not jointed, indehiscent; the walls thick and reticulate.

Worldwide: c.20 species in S America
