Annual or perennial herbs, rarely shrublets. Flowers in terminal cymes, 5-merous. Sepals undivided. Stamens 5, sometimes alternating with staminodes. Ovary 5-locular. Styles 5. Fruit a 5-locular 10-valved capsule with 2-seeded loculi

Worldwide: 180 spp. in temperate and subtropical zones, especially in the Mediterranean area.

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
