Description of the genus

Monoecious trees. Leaves paripinnate. Leaflets entire. Flowers 4-5-merous, unisexual in large, much-branched panicles. Petals 4 or 5, free, somewhat hooded. Staminal tube bearing 8-10 anthers or sterile anthers towards the apex and terminated by 8-10 overlapping appendages alternating with the anthers or sterile anthers. Ovary 4-5-locular. Fruit an erect subspherical woody septifragal capsule, opening from the apex by 4-5(-6) valves. Seeds broadly transversely ellipsoid or subcircular, narrowly winged all round the margin.

Worldwide: c.7 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
