Description of the genus

Dioecious herb (in ours). Leaves opposite, simple. Stipules present. Inflorescences laxly paniculate (in ours), unisexual; male with many flowers, female few-flowered. Male flowers: sepals 5; petals 0; disk glands turbinate; stamens (4-)10(-14), 2-seriate. Female flowers: pedicels often reflexed; sepals and petals as in the male; disk glands 3, alternating with the carpels; styles 3, 2-fid or 2-partite. Fruits 3-lobed, dehiscing into 3 cocci.

Worldwide: 8 species in southern Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
