Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, latex not evident. Stipules small, connate, leaving annular scars at nodes. Leaves alternate, short-petiolate; lamina simple, margins entire or rarely sparsely serrulate. Inflorescence glomerules or cymes, leaf-opposed. Sepals 5 or 6, free, imbricate, sometimes glandular abaxially; petals absent. Fruit capsules or sometimes indehiscent and drupe-like. Seeds covered by pale sarcotesta, endosperm present, cotyledon broad and flat.

Worldwide: 35 species in Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
