Description of the genus

Trees, shrubs or herbs. Leaves opposite; lamina with translucent glandular dots, which may be linear, and frequently with black, submarginal glandular dots. Flowers terminal, solitary or in a cymose inflorescence, sometimes forming a corymb or panicle, bisexual. Sepals usually 5. Petals usually 5, yellow, often tinged with red. Stamens few-many, in 5 fascicles. Styles (2-)3-5. Fruit a capsule. Seeds minute.

Worldwide: c.370 species in termperate zones and on tropical mountains
