Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, usually with a rusty indumentum. Stipules minute, caducous. Leaves alternate, petiolate, coriaceous. Inflorescences in terminal panicles. Flowers bisexual, 5-merous. Corona well-developed, composed of numerous laciniae in 1 row. Stamens 5; filaments connate below. Ovary 1-locular with 3-5, multiovulate, parietal placentas. Styles (2-)3(-5). Capsule 3(-5)-valved; valves tomentose, membranous. Seeds ovoid, flattened, enveloped by a fleshy cup-shaped aril.

Worldwide: c.10 species in Africa and Madagascar and 1 in Sumatra and Malaysia.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
