Small, slender, caespitose perennial; culms up to 28 cm tall, erect, wiry; basal leaf sheaths persistent, finally becoming coarsely fibrous; leaf lamina 1–9 cm × 0.5 mm, filiform, tightly folded or rarely flat, blunt at the apex.Racemes 2–8 cm long, slender, erect, straight or nearly so.Spikelets (3)5–10-flowered, (2.6)3.2–8 mm long, narrowly elliptic-oblong, overlapping; glumes 1-nerved, the inferior 0.8–2(2.7) mm long, lanceolate, broadened or lobed below the middle on one side, acute to acuminate, the superior (1.5)2–3.2 mm long, narrowly oblong, acute to subobtuse; callus dorsally appressed-villous, densely barbate in front at the base of the rhachilla internode; lemmas (1)1.6–2.3 mm long, narrowly elliptic-oblong, dorsally rounded, emarginate or bluntly 2-toothed at the apex, mucronate or shortly awned from between the teeth, the lateral nerves not or only slightly excurrent; mucro 0.1–1.2 mm long; anthers 3, 0.2–0.5 mm long.Caryopsis 0.8–1.2 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, obtusely trigonous in section.
