Small perennial with culms 10–30 cm. long straggling or forming tufts from slender wiry rhizomes. Leaf laminae 2–5 cm. long and 1–5 mm. wide, linear-lanceolate, flat, sharply acute. Panicle small 0.7–3.5 cm. long, narrowly oblong very sparsely branched, the branches often somewhat contracted. Spikelets 2–3 mm. long, ovate-elliptic, glabrous; inferior glume as long as the spikelet, (3)5-nerved; superior glume 7-nerved; inferior lemma 5-nerved its palea well developed, male; superior lemma and palea pallid, glossy
