Description:
A terrestrial up to 1.3 m tall, with long narrow leaves, usually absent or just developing at the time of flowering. The inflorescence may have up to 9 large, deep-pink flowers with purple and yellow markings in the throat. The flowers, up to 3.5 cm in diameter, may vary in size but are otherwise fairly consistent throughout the range.

Derivation of specific name: cucullata: hooded
Habitat: A species found in many types of woodland and wooded grassland, roadsides and along forest margins.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1700 m
Flowering time:Oct - Dec
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa, South Africa and Madagascar.
