Common names:
Frequency: Very rare in Zimbabwe.
Status: Native
Slender terrestrial, up to 1 m tall. Leaves 2-3, linear, grass-like, 30-55 cm long, well developed at time of flowering. Inflorescence fairly densely 8-20-flowered. Flowers drooping, bright orange to vermillion-red, lip usually paler at the base and with a yellow callus. Petals and sepals similar, linear, 26-55 mm long, petals sorter than sepals. Spur absent.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: Open grassland on kalahari sand, dambo and other poorly drained grassland and on sandy soils in miombo woodland.
Altitude range: (metres) 700 - 1500 m
Flowering time:Jan - Mar(Apr)
Worldwide distribution: Botswana, Namibia (Caprivi), DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe distribution: W
Growth form(s): Terrestrial.
Endemic status:
