Description:
Small to medium-sized evergreen tree with a distinct mushroom shape. The fruit is much sought after and the trees are normally left standing when areas of woodland are cleared, making them a conspicuous feature along the roads in the highveld. The flowers are small, white to pink, the calyces and stalks covered in dense woolly, rust-coloured hairs.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: curatellifolia: with leaves like a Curatella (Dilleniaceae, a largely Australasian family)
Habitat: In open woodland, characteristic of sandy soils.
