Description:
Small to medium-sized deciduous tree, to 9 m. Bark pale whitish-grey. Leaves 2-foliolate; leaflets ovate, only slightly curved, 3-5 cm long, asymmetric, glossy green above, paler below, hairless; apex rounded. Flowers in lax terminal heads, creamy-yellow to white, c. 5 mm in diameter. Fruit a flat, thin, leathery pod, almost round, c. 4 × 3 cm, pale creamy brown, indehiscent. Seed without an aril.
Notes: Wild, H., Biegel, H.M. & Mavi, S. (1972). A Rhodesian Botanical Dictionary of African and English Plant Names , page 178, give the following succinct summary of how G. conjugata differs: Distinguished from G. coleosperma by its deciduous habit, its smaller size, its narrower crown, the bark roughish and grey, the smaller, more rounded leaflets with fewer lateral veins and a shorter petiole and in the flat pod and flat seed.
Derivation of specific name: conjugata: joined or connected, referring to the 2 leaflets.
Habitat: On deep sand in open woodland and along river banks.
