Description:
Small succulent shrub usually much less than 1 m tall. Branches 4-6-angled, occasionally slightly and distantly constricted. Spine shields forming a continuous horny ridge along the angles. Flowers unisexual, yellow. Fruit a 3-lobed capsule, c. 5 mm in diameter, exserted on a recurved pedicel.
Notes: See subsp. mashonica for comparison.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In shallow soils on granite rocks.
Altitude range: (metres) 850 - 1700 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Limpopo, South Africa.
Zimbabwe distribution: N,W,C,E,S
