Description:
Shrub or small tree. Bark yellow-white to grey, finely fissured, branches with scattered pale lenticels, usually unarmed but occasionally armed with spines, up to 3.5 cm long. Leaves broadly elliptic to almost round, 2.5-8 cm, dark glossy green above, paler below, lateral veins prominent on both surfaces; margins entire or irregularly toothed. Flowers short-lived, very small, greenish yellow, stamens c.15. Fruit ellipsoid, fleshy, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, velvety, cupped by the small recurved calyx lobes; bright orange-red when ripe, edible but sour.
