Description:	More or less erect perennial herb, growing from a woody rootstock. Axillary tendrils present, up to 8 cm long. Leaves up to 10 cm long, narrowly elliptic to lanceolate; margin finely serrated. False stipules 1-4 cm long, lobed, asymmetrical. Flowers 1-2 in the axils on a long peduncle, pale yellow-green. Petals absent but inner sepals petal-like. Capsule 1.5-2 cm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name:	apetala: without petals.
Habitat:	In grassland, savanna woodland and scrub.
