Small to medium-sized deciduous tree. Leaves broadly elliptic, covered in grey velvety hairs on both surfaces, venation distinctly sunken above. Flowers in dense axillary spikes, greenish yellow, strongly scented. Fruit 4-winged, 1.5-2 c, in diameter, yellowish green, drying to reddish brown. | |
| Notes: | Leaves and roots are used as a dressing for wounds; a root extract is also used as a cough medicine. Although the trees are popular with bees, the honey is said to have an unpleasant taste. | |
