Shrub or small tree. Leaves opposite, oblong-elliptic, glabrous, somewhat leathery, gland-dotted, midrib prominent below. Flowers singly or in small clusters below the leaves on previous year's growth, white with a conspicuous mass of stamens. Fruit a round berry, red to purple when ripe, edible.
