Description:
Erect or spreading perennial shrubby herb with annual stems, up to 60 cm tall, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves subsessile, lanceolate to broadly elliptic-oblong, up to 4.5 cm long, covered with medifixed hairs on both surfaces; apex often with a mucronate tip. Flowers in few-flowered axillary clusters, small, funnel-shaped, white or yellowish. Capsule ovoid to subspherical, hairless. See var. hirsutissima for comparison.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: suffruticosa: a suffrutex, shrubby plant, woody at the base, regrowing annually from a strong perennial underground base.
Habitat: In sandy or stony soils in deciduous woodland, scrub, wooded grassland and along roadsides.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1370 m
Flowering time: Oct - Mar
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa.
