Description:
Perennial herb or suffrutex with 1-several simple stems up to 75 cm tall, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves 3-whorled, rarely opposite or 4-whorled, subsessile, mostly elliptic-oblong, up to 5 cm long, densely gland-dotted beneath. flowers in 1-3-flowered axillary clusters, deep or bright blue, violet-blue or lilac-blue with violet, yellow or white stripes on the mid lobe. Fruit deeply lobed, c. 8 mm long, black.
Notes: Two forms are recognized: forma hirsuta is usually more or less densely hairy on stems, leaves and calyx; forma triphylla is mostly hairless or sometimes pubescent on the calyx. Both forms are found in the same areas.
Derivation of specific name: hirsuta: covered with long, moderately stiff and not interwoven hairs; hirsute
Habitat: In wooded grassland and along margins of forest on mountain sides.

Worldwide distribution: Southern Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
