Frequency: Very rare in Zimbabwe.
Status: Native
Description:
Suffrutex or sometimes a shrub up to 1.6 m, rarely taller, mostly with simple or sparsely branched rect stems. Leaves opposite or 3-whorled, 2-20 cm long, elliptic to lanceolate, long attenuate towards the base, tapering into a subpetiole, usually slightly discolorous, shortly pubescent about,more densely so beneath; margin usually with 1-7 large, almost lobe-like, triangular teeth at each side. Inflorescences terminal, condensed, 5-18-flowered; bracts 2-3 mm long, narrowly triangular. Corolla white with an erect tube, 5-11.3 cm long; lobes oblong 8-15 mm long. Style purple and white; anthers purple. Fruit depressed globose, c. 9 mm in diameter, 3-4-lobed, hairless.
Notes: The unusually large fruit in the image above have been galled.

Habitat: In understorey of well-developed Brachystegia woodland and evergreen forest.

Worldwide distribution: Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, just entering eastern Zimbabwe.
