Description:
Shrubby herb up to 2 m high; stems sparsely hairy or pubescent with whitish or purplish hairs and scattered sessile glands. Leaves mostly lanceolate to ovate, rarely elliptic, 2-6 cm long, rough-hairy above, greyish hairy or almost hairless beneath; petiole 2-10 mm long. Inflorescence more or less distinct, up to 30 cm long, sometimes longer; verticils up to 40 mm apart, usually secund with up to 7 flowers in the axils of the lower bracts; bracts greenish purple, up to c. 2 cm long, much smaller than the leaves. Flowering calyx brown to dark purple, more or less densely covered with white to violet hairs; fruiting calyx brown to purple, up to 2 cm long, swollen, spitting into 2 parts. Corolla 25-25 mm long, deep reddish-brown to dark blackish-purple.
Notes: This species is best distinguished from Tinnea rhodesiana by the more or less distinct terminal inflorescence with verticils subtended by bracts much smaller than the foliage leaves.
Derivation of specific name: zambesiaca: of the Zambezi region
Habitat: Miombo and mixed woodland, wooded grassland, along stream sides and on rocky outcrops.
