Synonyms: Iboza multiflora (Benth.) E.A. Bruce
Iboza riparia (Hochst.) N.E. Br.
Common names: Chororwe (Shona) Ginger bush (English)
Frequency: Common
Status: Native
Description:
Herbaceous, deciduous shrub or small tree. Stems semi-succulent, brittle. Leaves ovate-oblong to rotund, variously covered with glandular hairs on both sides, the underside covered in whitish velvety hairs. Margins coarsely crenate-dentate. Inflorescences together forming large many-branched panicles, terminal, usually appearing when the plant is leafless. Flowers minute, pale to deep, mauve-pink or lilac, sometimes white, unisexual in different spikes within the same inflorescence.
Notes: The concept of this species has long been confusing. Many different taxa have at times been described only to become synonyms of T. riparia again when treated in other literature. In a recent publication (Phillipson & Steyn, 2008) several names were either reinstated or newly described. According to this new concept no fewer than 4 species, formerly included under T. riparia, occur in Zimbabwe, not including T. brevispicata which has always been considered distinct. Since these new concepts are very difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish in the field and all our recordings, both in the field and from herbarium specimens, have been treated as T. riparia, we have retained this aggregate species T. riparia sensu lato to hold these records.
Derivation of specific name: riparia: of riverbanks, although certainly not restricted to that habitat.
