Description:
Erect annual herb, up to c. 50 cm tall. Stems simple or branched, with coarse whitish hairs. Leaves mostly opposite, spreading, more or less sessile, sometimes alternate and shortly petiolate within the inflorescence, broadly ovate to almost round, 1.5 - 5 cm long; margin coarsely toothed. Flowers in the axils of leaves or leaf-like bracts, pale yellow to dull orange, sometimes purple-veined. See var. sessiliflora and var. monticola (Engl.) Melch. for comparison.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sessiliflora: flowers without stalks
Habitat: Occurring in Brachystegia woodland, wet (montane) grassland and along streams and lakes.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 2280 m
Flowering time:Aug - May
Worldwide distribution: From West Africa to Ethiopia, Sudan and South to Botswana, Caprivi-Namibia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
