Description:	Shrubby perennial herb. Leaves opposite lanceolate; margin entire. Flowers axillary, showy, mauve purple with a darker throat; corolla lobes broad and overlapping. Enlarged calyx lobes distinctly swollen, broadly ovate with prominent veins; margin entire without spines.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name:	mackenii: after Mark J. McKen (?-1872), Scottish plant collector and herbarium curator at the Durban Botanic Gardens.
