Description:
More or less erect annual herb, sometimes rooting at the nodes. Leaves opposite, narrowly lanceolate to ovate, 3.5 - 9.5 cm long, usually with at least some hairs, particularly on the veins. Petiole up to 3 cm long. Flowers in axillary clusters. Bracts and calyx with long woolly hairs. Corolla 5-7 mm long, pale to deep mauve or violet; base of the lower lip often white with darker mauve lines or spots.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: heterocarpa: with fruits of different shapes.
Habitat: Occurring in riverine fringes or on rocky outcrops, usually in the shade of trees.
Altitude range: (metres) 100 - 1460 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Namibia, DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
