Description:
Shrub or small tree. Bark greyish, smooth; branches opposite, often with spines in 3's. Leaves opposite, along most of the branches, narrowly elliptic, up to c. 7.5 × 2.5 cm, hairless with paler lateral veins; domatia present. Flowers in 3-25-flowered heads, greenish-yellow. Fruit asymmetrically ovoid, up to 2.5 × 2 cm, 2-lobed, blackish.
Notes: Contrary to what is mentioned in most literature, this (sub)species is not restricted to the Chimanimani Mts but can be found in other parts of the Eastern Highlands as well as on Mt Gorongosa in Mozambique (Müller and Burrows, pers. comm., 2007).
