Description:
Hairless shrub or tree up to 15 m tall but usually smaller. Leaves elliptic, oblong or obovate, 7-18 cm long, yellow-green, smooth but with fine net-veining visible against the light. Inflorescences supra-axillary, compact, several flowered. Peduncle stout, flattened, thickened above. Calyx tube 0.7-1.5 mm. Corolla white, sweet-scented. Fruit 5-6 mm long, sessile, dark purple when ripe.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: schweinfurthii: after Dr Georg August Schweinfurth (1836-1925), German botanical collector and taxonomist.
Habitat: In dry evergreen forest and mist forest; sometimes on termite mounds
Altitude range: (metres) 200 - 1770 m

Worldwide distribution: Nigeria, Cameroun, Central and East Africa, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.
