Description:
Shrub or small tree. Bark whitish to pale grey, smooth or finely cracked into squarish pieces. Leaves opposite, elliptic, up to c. 11 cm long, glossy dark green, hairless, with scattered, dot-like to elliptic bacterial nodules, hair-tuft domatia present. Inflorescences on short side branches, with 1-2 pairs of leaves near the apex. Flowers white to greenish-white, sweetly scented; corolla tube 4-7 mm long, slightly shorter than the lobes; style up to 2.5 cm long. Fruit c. 10 mm in diameter, round, glossy black when ripe.
Notes: Specimens of this species turn black when dry.
Derivation of specific name: umtalensis: of Umtali (now Mutare), a city and district in Eastern Zimbabwe.
Habitat: In montane evergreen forest.
Altitude range: (metres) 1200 - 2000 m

Worldwide distribution: Border mountains of Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
