Synonyms:
Common names:
Frequency: Locally very common
Status: Native
Description:
Shrub-like plant, usually single-stemmed, 1-3 m tall. Branches ascending to erect, densely covered with greyish hairs. Leaves in whorls of 3, narrowly (ob)lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, up to c. 6 cm long, more or less densely covered in whitish, short spreading hairs; margin entire, usually flat. Stipular sheath hairy with at least one hairy seta, 1-6.5 mm long. Flowers in dense clusters at the nodes, greenish-yellow, sometimes purple-tinged, unisexual; male and female flowers usually on different plants. Fruit with mericarps oblong to obovate, 1.5-2.5 mm long, hairless, reddish-brown.
Notes: It is a typical constituent of the ecotone between forest and grassland. It may become a dominating species in secondary montane grassland, together with the grass Eragrostis acraea and the bracken fern Pteridium aquilinum.
Though not listed in Endemic Plants Species of Zimbabwe (A. Mapaura in Kirkia 18-2, 2002), the restricted distribution of this species would justify this as a near-endemic.
