Description:
Slender scandent herb with annual stems arising from a perennial rootstock. Leaves variable, ovate to triangular in outline, more or less 3-lobed, finely rough above and on the veins below; margin entire or with a few small teeth. Flowers solitary, unisexual on the same plant, white fading to cream. Fruit 15-45 mm long, spindle-shaped, red when ripe.
Notes: The African populations were previously included under the broadly defined name Zeyhneria thwaitesii. That species is now considered purely Asian while the African and Malagasy species is now known by the reinstated name Z. tridactyla.
