Description:
Perennial herb. Leaves in a basal rosette, variable in shape and size, dark green above, covered in whitish felt below with veining distinctly raised. Flowering stems 1-several, 20-50 cm. Capitula solitary, yellow. Ray florets long, narrow and appearing pointed at the apex. Disk florets numerous, compacted.
Notes: Similar to Gerbera ambigua which is another scapose yellow composite. The two may be separated as follows:
  • The ray florets of Gerbera are 2-lipped with a long 3-toothed outer lip and a short 2-lobed inner lip whereas the ray florets of Haplocarpha are simple and 3-toothed;
  • Gerbera ambigua has a woolly base, which Haplocarpha does not;
  • The achenes of Haplocarpha have a basal coma (tuft) of hairs which is absent in Gerbera.

Habitat: Montane grassland and along the edges of vleis, bogs and seepage zones.
