Status: Native
Description:
Usually a small, densely-branched deciduous tree. Leaves in whorls of 3 on short, rigid side branchlets, which look almost like blunt spines. Flowers solitary at the ends of the branchlets, white and showy but short lived, turning yellow when fading. Fruit greyish to pale brown, ellipsoid to almost spherical with 8-11 coarse ribs, sometimes only shallow, covered in small wart-like lenticels.
Notes: See subsp. spathulifolia for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: volkensii: after G. Volkens who collected on Mt Kilimanjaro 1892, 1893 and 1894
Habitat: In open sandy places, along dry stream banks and margins of pans and in deciduous or mopane woodland.

Worldwide distribution: Ethiopia, southern Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
