Description of the family

Aquatic herbs. Leaves basal, distichous, erect. Inflorescence an umbel. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals 3, green. Petals 3, larger than the sepals, delicate, not persistent, white, pink or yellow. Stamens c.9. Carpels superior, united at base. Fruit a whorl of follicles.

Worldwide: 3 genera and 11 species.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated genus and 1 cultivated taxon.
