Annual herb (in ours). Leaves alternate or fasciculate, simple to pinnatipartite. Stipules present, small. Inflorescence of terminal racemes. Flowers bisexual or rarely unisexual, usually zygomorphic. Calyx 6-lobed, accrescent. Petals 6, laciniate. Ovary superior, of 2-6 free or connate carpels. Fruit a capsule. Seeds numerous. Worldwide: 6 genera and 80 species, Northern hemisphere, mostly Old World. (Our single species is an introduced plant). Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated genus and 2 cultivated taxa. |
