Description of the family

Climbers (in ours), often dioecious. Leaves alternate, simple. Inflorescences axillary. Flowers usually with 4 or 5 sepals and petals. Stamens numerous, free or variously united at base. Ovary superior with many ovules. Fruit a berry (in ours).

Worldwide: 3 genera and 340 species in tropical and warm areas and on Asian mountains

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated genus and 1 cultivated taxon.
