Description of the genus

Deciduous trees or shrubs. Leaves opposite or alternate. Inflorescence a dense terminal, spherical head of flowers. Involucral bracts rigid, persistent. Calyx tube cylindric, often curved; lobes (4) 5, outer slightly larger than inner. Petals 0. Stamens 10, twice as many as the calyx lobes. Ovary 1-locular.

Derivation of name: Dais - torch; referring to the flower heads.

Worldwide: 25 species in southern Africa and Madagascar

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
