Description of the genus

Perennial rhizomatous herbs. Leaves large, palmately-nerved, arising from the rhizome and borne on long petioles.. Inflorescence composed of spikes borne on a scape which arises from the rhizome. Flowers bisexual or unisexual. Calyx lobes 0, 2(-3), minute. Petals 2, alternating with calyx lobes. Stamens and styles 2. Fruit a drupelet.

Worldwide: c. 40 species, widespread, mostly southern hemisphere.
