Description of the genus

Annual, biennial or perennial strigose herbs. Leaves lanceolate. Inflorescence consisting of cymes or panicles, terminal; flowers often pedicellate. Calyx 5-parted; lobes linear-lanceolate; corolla blue, purple or pink, campanulate or tubular, distinctly zygomorphic, usually pubescent outside. Fruit consisting of nutlets, usually light brown, straight or ovoid.

Worldwide: >40 species in Africa, W Asia and Europe.
