Description of the genus

Unarmed herbs or small shrubs. Leaves alternate, entire. Inflorescences in terminal or lateral cymes. Flowers actinomorphic or slightly zygomorphic, showy. Calyx ± curved, 10-ribbed and deeply 5-lobed; lobes linear to triangular-lanceolate. Corolla white with a yellow or purple centre or variously coloured; tube long; limb expanded. Stamens 5, arising from the corolla mouth, adnate around the style, exserted. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 23 species from Mexico to Chile, mainly in Argentina

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
