Description of the genus

Small shrubs or procumbent, perennial herbs. Leaves varying from ovate to linear. Inflorescence of axillary cymes with few to many flowers; bracteoles large and conspicuous, often leathery and reticulately veined, enclosing the calyx and corolla tube. Calyx divided almost to the base; lobes 5. Corolla with 5 spreading subequal lobes; palate prominently transversely ribbed. Fruit a capsule, flattened, with a thickened apical 'knob'.

Worldwide: 35 species in tropical and South Africa, the western Himalayas and western India.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
