Description of the genus

Herbs or shrubs. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, thyrses, cymes or solitary. Calyx actinomorphic, 5-lobed. Corolla ± actinomorphic or 2-lipped; campanulate above; rugula on upper lip indistinct; lobes 5. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous; anthers 2-thecous. Ovary with 2 ovules. Seeds without hygroscopic hairs.

Worldwide: c. 70 species in the Old World tropics

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
