Description of the genus

Erect perennial herbs, rhizomatous with storage roots. Leaves sessile, usually resupinate, linear; margins entire; Inflorescence terminal, umbellate, or of simple or branched cymes; 2-many flowered, rarely solitary; bracts leaf-like. Flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic; tepals 6, free, 2-whorled; ovary inferior. Fruit a dehiscent capsule. Seeds globose.

Worldwide: 123 species in South America
