Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, small, deciduous; corm globose to conical. Leaves several, unifacial, mostly basal; lamina usually lanceolate; apex usually obtuse. Inflorescence a spike; bracts dry, crinkled, translucent, irregularly streaked with brown markings. Flowers often large, variously coloured, actinomorphic and rotate or zygomorphic and bilabiate; tepals sub-equal and spreading, or the uppermost largest. Fruit a barrel-shaped capsule. Seeds 8-15 per locule, globose, glossy.

Worldwide: 15 species in South Africa.
