Description of the genus

Trees. Leaves imparipinnate. Male flowers borne in unbranched catkins on previous year's branches: calyx 3-6-lobed; stamens numerous. Female flowers in few-flowered spikes: calyx 4-lobed; petals 4; styles 2. Husk of fruit indehiscent.
