Annual or perennial soft herbs. Leaves toothed. Inflorescences usually simple, of one to several verticils; verticils few- to many-flowered; bracts broad-based, often clasping. Calyx tubular-campanulate, usually 5-nerved with 5 teeth. Corolla bilabiate, white, pink or purple; tube dilated towards the mouth, upper lip ascending, concave; lower lip spreading. Fruit nutlets, smooth. Worldwide: About 40 species in the north temperate zone of the Old World; 1 species fairly widespread in southern Africa. Zimbabwe: 4 cultivated taxa. |
