Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves shortly petiolate, leathery; stipules deciduous. Flowers in many-flowered clusters. Calyx 5-lobed, lobes longer than the tube, hairy. Corolla orange to dark red, hairy; 5-lobed, lobes much shorter than the tube. Fruit a round berry, crowned with a persistent calyx. Seeds many, somewhat compressed.

Derivation of name: after William John Burchell, 1781–1863, English explorer, who collected plants in South Africa between 1810 and 1815.
