Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, usually hairy. Leaves petiolate, toothed. Inflorescences if spaced, dense, many-flowered verticils; bracts leaf-like; flowers sessile. Calyx tubular, widening towards the mouth, 5-10 nerved, densely hairy inside mouth; teeth 10, sub-equal, spine recurved or hooked. Corolla small, white to purplish; tube included in the calyx, upper lip erect. Lower lip slightly longer and spreading. Fruit ovoid nutlets.

Worldwide: 30 species native to Europe, North Africa and Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
