Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs, sometimes shrubs. Stems scrambling or climbing. Leaves alternate, petiolate. Flowers in lax racemes or panicles or clusters in leaf axils. Perianth 5(6)-merous, the 3 outer segments accrescent and keeled or winged in fruit. Fruit a nut trigonous, not exceeding the perianth.

Worldwide: Nine species from Europe and Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
